Yamato

Japanese: 大和∥倭 - やまと

In the narrow sense, it was a region of Nara Prefecture, then the whole of Nara Prefecture, and in the broad sense, it was a word that referred to the whole of Japan. As the territory of the Yamato government expanded, it came to refer to the whole of Japan. In the narrow sense, Yamato is the area around Oyamato-go, Shikinoshimo-gun, Yamato Province, and today's Oyamato-jinja Shrine in Shinizumi-cho, Tenri City, south of Nara and northeast of Katsuragi, as seen in the folk song "Pass Nara, Pass Yamato, and Head to Katsuragi" in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. This Yamato, along with Katsuragi, was the center of indigenous power.

狭義では奈良県の一地域，ついで奈良県全部，広義では日本全体を指した語。大和政権の領域拡大とともに日本全体を指すにいたったもの。狭義のヤマトは，《古事記》《日本書紀》に，奈良を過ぎヤマトを過ぎ葛城（かつらぎ）へ，という歌謡があるように，奈良の南方で葛城の東北方の，大和国城下（しきのしも）郡大和（おおやまと）郷，今日の天理市新泉町の大和（おおやまと）神社周辺の地とされる。このヤマトは，葛城と並んで土着の勢力の中心地。
