A village in Tsukubo County in the southern part of Okayama Prefecture. Population 3,856 (1995). Bordering the three cities of Okayama, Kurashiki, and Soja, it forms a corner of the Okayama Plain. There are many ruins and historical sites, and together with the neighboring city of Soja to the north, it is said to be the center of Kibi culture. The village's name comes from the fact that it was located in the mountains from the city of Soja, where the ancient provincial capital was located. The old Sanyo Road runs east-west through the northern part of the village. Agriculture is the main industry, with rice farming, greenhouse horticulture, and rush cultivation at the core, but in recent years the proportion of suburban agriculture has increased, and celery is particularly abundant. The remains of Bitchu Kokubunniji Temple (history) and Fukuyama Castle are located here, and the village is included in the Kibiji Fudoki-no-Oka Prefectural Natural Park.
