An index that shows the weight of a company's payment obligations, such as interest paid. When analyzing a company's management, there are various indices (financial ratios) to see short-term payment ability (liquidity), long-term stability (safety), profit acquisition status (profitability), growth rate (growth potential), business efficiency (productivity), etc. Among these, current ratios (current assets ÷ current liabilities) and quick ratios (current assets ÷ current liabilities) are known to show short-term payment ability, but when it comes to repaying funds that are owed, the more practical target is interest paid. Meanwhile, it is operating profit that is used for this payment. Therefore, interest coverage, which shows how many times the company's profit is compared to interest, is considered to be an effective indicator of a company's ability to pay in an emergency. It is defined as (operating profit + interest received/dividends) ÷ (interest paid/discounts). The higher this is, the higher the company's short-term payment ability is. The manufacturing interest coverage ratio was 17.74 in 2004, a significant improvement from 10.69 in 2002.

支払利息など、企業が負っている支払い義務の重さの程度を表す指標。会社の経営分析を行う際には、短期支払能力(流動性)、長期的安定性(安全性)、利益の獲得状況(収益性)、伸び率(成長性)、事業の効率の良さ(生産性)などを見るための様々な指標(財務比率)がある。この中で、短期支払能力を見るには、流動比率(流動資産÷流動負債)、当座比率(当座資産÷流動負債)などが知られているが、いざ返済義務のある資金を返済しようとなると、より実際的には支払利息がその対象となる。一方その支払いに充てられるのは営業利益である。そこで、企業のいざという時の支払能力を表すものとして、会社が利息の何倍の利益を上げているかを示すインタレスト・カバレッジが、有効な指標とされている。その定義は、(営業利益+受取利息・配当金)÷(支払利息・割引料)。これが高いほど会社の短期支払能力は高いことになる。04年の製造業のインタレスト・カバレッジは17.74であり、02年の10.69から大きく向上している。
