[Brazilian Literature]
Brazilian literature during the colonial period (1500-1822) was an extension of that of the Iberian Peninsula, and among its poets the Baroque poet Gregório de Matos (1633-69) left behind outstanding works on the subject of Brazilian land and people. The transfer of the Portuguese royal family to Brazil in 1808 and the attainment of political independence in 1822 boosted nationalism, and in literature there was a call to break away from imitation of Portugal.
