...The term for the liberal theology that was brought to Japan from Germany in the 1880s. In 1885, the missionary Wilfrid Spinner (1854-1918) was sent by the Association for the Promotion of the Gospel, and came to Japan. He opened a Protestant seminary and published the magazine "Truth," preaching a liberal Christianity based on a rationalist understanding of the Bible through the historical and critical methods of the Tübingen School. His teachings, which did not regard the Bible as an infallible book of divine revelation but sought ethical significance as a religious record, came as a great shock to the clergy and members of Protestant churches in Japan, who had been influenced by British and American missionaries who held a supernatural understanding of the gospel to be the orthodox view, and many left the churches and lost their faith.

…明治20年代，ドイツより日本にもたらされた自由主義神学に対する呼称。1885年普及福音同盟より派遣された宣教師シュピンナーWilfrid Spinner(1854‐1918)が来日，新教神学校を開設し，雑誌《真理》を発行してチュービンゲン学派の歴史的･批判的方法による聖書の合理主義的理解にもとづく自由主義的キリスト教を宣教した。聖書を無謬の神の啓示の書とせず，宗教的記録として倫理的な意義を求めたその教説は，それまで超自然的な福音理解を正統とするイギリスやアメリカの宣教師の影響のもとにあった日本のプロテスタント教会の教職･信徒に大きな衝撃を与え，教会を去り信仰を喪失する者が相次いだ。…
