A Buddhist sculptor who was active during the Asuka and Hakuho periods and was a descendant of immigrants. He is thought to be the same person as Yamaguchi Nao-Oguchi, who appears in the Nihon Shoki. He is known to have been a famous Buddhist sculptor at the time, as he erected the "Thousand Buddhas" by imperial decree in the 1st year of the Hakuchi era (650) and his name is on the halo of the "Komokuten" statue, one of the "Four Heavenly Kings" statues currently extant in the Golden Hall of Horyuji Temple. 飛鳥~白鳳時代に活躍した渡来人の子孫の仏師。『日本書紀』記述中の山口直大口 (やまぐちのあたいおおぐち) と同一人物と考えられる。白雉1 (650) 年詔により『千仏像』を造立,また法隆寺金堂に現存の『四天王像』のうち『広目天像』の光背に名を残し,当時著名な仏師であったことが知られる。
