The largest island of the Solomon Islands in the southwest Pacific Ocean. It occupies the southeastern part of the archipelago. It is a volcanic island with a series of 2000m-class mountains and dense forests. The inhabitants are mainly Melanesian, and produce yams, taro, copra, and timber. Honiara on the north coast is the capital of the Solomon Islands. The island was the scene of fierce fighting between Japan and the United States during World War II.
