Born June 30th, 1856. In 1881, he founded the second-hand bookstore Sanseido in Kanda, Tokyo. He also expanded into publishing, issuing the English-Japanese Dictionary of Rare Words in 1884. In 1906, he began publishing the Japanese Encyclopedia, but went bankrupt due to financial difficulties. In 1915, he rebuilt the company as a joint-stock company. He passed away January 30th, 1936.
