Tadakazu Kamei

Japanese: 亀井忠一 - かめいただかず

1856-1936 A publisher from the Meiji to early Showa period.
Born June 30th, 1856. In 1881, he founded the second-hand bookstore Sanseido in Kanda, Tokyo. He also expanded into publishing, issuing the English-Japanese Dictionary of Rare Words in 1884. In 1906, he began publishing the Japanese Encyclopedia, but went bankrupt due to financial difficulties. In 1915, he rebuilt the company as a joint-stock company. He passed away January 30th, 1936. He was 81 years old. He was from Edo. His maiden name was Nakagawa.

安政3年6月30日生まれ。明治14年東京神田に古本屋三省堂を創業。出版業にも進出して,17年「英和袖珍字彙(しゅうちんじい)」を発行。41年「日本百科大辞典」の刊行を開始したが,資金難のため倒産。大正4年株式会社として再建した。昭和11年1月30日死去。81歳。江戸出身。旧姓は中川。
