A village in Tano County in the southwest of Gunma Prefecture. Population 1,586 (1995). It occupies the upper reaches of the Kanna River and borders Nagano and Saitama prefectures. During the Edo period, a checkpoint was set up at Shiroi on the Tokkoku Toge Highway, which was used as a side road for the Nakasendo road, and rice imported from the Shinshu side was traded there. The town is surrounded by mountains over 1,000 meters above sea level, and 97% of the total area is forest, with a high proportion of people working in forestry. There are almost no rice paddies, and the town mainly produces konjac, as well as shiitake mushrooms and nameko mushrooms. 群馬県南西部,多野郡の村。人口1586(1995)。神流(かんな)川最上流域を占め,長野県,埼玉県と接する。江戸時代に中山道の脇往還として用いられた十石峠街道の白井(しろい)に関所が設けられ,信州側から移入された米が取引された。周囲を標高1000m以上の山々で囲まれ,総面積の97%が山林で,林業従事者の占める割合は高い。水田はほとんどなく,コンニャクの生産を中心にシイタケ,ナメコ栽培が行われる。1960年以降,人口流出が激しく,過疎化が著しい。
