A village in Tano County in the southwest of Gunma Prefecture. Population 1,586 (1995). It occupies the upper reaches of the Kanna River and borders Nagano and Saitama prefectures. During the Edo period, a checkpoint was set up at Shiroi on the Tokkoku Toge Highway, which was used as a side road for the Nakasendo road, and rice imported from the Shinshu side was traded there. The town is surrounded by mountains over 1,000 meters above sea level, and 97% of the total area is forest, with a high proportion of people working in forestry. There are almost no rice paddies, and the town mainly produces konjac, as well as shiitake mushrooms and nameko mushrooms. Since the 1960s, there has been a large outflow of population, and depopulation is significant.
