...In painting, it was an essential technique for the decoration of the Fujiwara Buddhist paintings of the Heian period. In the Phoenix Hall door painting, the outlines and folds of the clothes of the Buddha and Bodhisattva are all drawn with kirikane, and in the Ōtoku Nirvana Painting of 1086 (Ōtoku 3), the clothes of Shaka are decorated with kirikane patterns such as Shippo Tsunagi (shippo pattern), Tatewaku pattern, Manji Tsunagi (manji pattern), and Kikukamaru pattern, adding splendor to the painting. Furthermore, in the 1127 (Taiji 2) Toji Five Great Sons and the former Toji Twelve Devas, kirikane patterns show their zenith maturity. ...
