Born January 11, 1790. A samurai of the Hagi Domain in Nagato (Yamaguchi Prefecture). In 1845, he became an Edo elder, and subsequently served as a national elder and a legal advisor. Even after retiring in 1820, he maintained influence over domain politics and supported the reformist faction. His 62 volumes of diary are valuable historical materials for the history of the Meiji Restoration at the end of the Edo period. He died June 1, 1870, at the age of 76. His real surname was Kunishi, and his given name was Motomasa. He was also commonly known as Bingo, and his pen name was Shinsai.
