In China's Qing dynasty, the term refers to official hunting grounds where the emperor and bannermen performed military exercises and hunted, and where meat and livestock were provided to the imperial family. The Qing dynasty was a Manchu dynasty, and they had a long-standing custom of hunting northern peoples (makigari) with the participation of tribes and villages. Hunting eventually became established as military training for the Qing dynasty's army (the Eight Bannermen), and hunting grounds for this purpose were set up in Shengjing, Jilin, Mulan (Hebei Province), and Suoyolqi (Suoyolqi) in Heilongjiang Province. Entry to these hunting grounds was restricted, but as the blockade of Manchuria was relaxed, they were gradually reclaimed, and by the end of the Qing Dynasty they were sold to private citizens.
