Shigeyuki Minamoto

Japanese:
Shigeyuki Minamoto

A poet of the mid-Heian period. He was the grandson of Emperor Seiwa and the son of Kanenobu. As his father Kanenobu had settled in Mutsu, he was raised by his uncle Kanetada. He is one of the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets. During his time as Crown Prince under Emperor Reizei, he became a Tatewaki Senjo (master of sword-holding), and during that time he submitted one of the oldest collections of one hundred poems in Japan, "Shige no Hyakushu." He was a provincial poet who held the posts of Sagami no Gon no Kami, Higo no Kami, and Chikuzen no Kami, and he also traveled a lot, relying on Fujiwara no Sukemasa and Fujiwara no Sanekata to travel to Tsukushi and Mutsu. As a result, he had a strong sense of being a wandering poet, and his poems often feature utamakura (a Japanese-style pillow). At the same time, there are also poems that lament his misfortune, and many of his poet friends were grief-stricken poets such as Minamoto no Shitago, Sone no Yoshitada, and Taira no Kanemori. He is the author of the poem "The wind is saddened, the waves that crash upon the rocks break my thoughts, and I am thinking of things" in the "Hyakunin Isshu," and his family anthology "Shigeyukishu" is included.
