Geologist and paleontologist. Born in Tokyo. Graduated from the Department of Geology at Tokyo Imperial University in 1901 (Meiji 34) with a graduation thesis on the Ishikari coalfield in Hokkaido. From 1908 to 1912, he studied in Europe and America. He became a professor at Tohoku Imperial University while studying abroad, and upon his return, he helped establish the Department of Geology and Paleontology at the same university. He conducted in-depth research into the geological structure and tectonic division of Japan, including the Median Tectonic Line, and named the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line. He also conducted research in many other areas of geology, including undersea topography and the Quaternary Ice Age. In particular, through his research into Cretaceous ammonites in Hokkaido and other areas, he established the outline of the Cretaceous stratigraphy of Japan, and made a great contribution to the development of paleontology and stratigraphy in Japan. He also trained many excellent researchers in various fields of paleontology. He became a member of the Imperial Academy in 1925 (Taisho 14) and received the Order of Culture in 1953 (Showa 28).
