The major work of British art critic John Ruskin, published in five volumes between 1843 and 1860. It took 17 years to complete the work after the first volume was published when he was just 24 years old, and although it lacks a unified structure throughout, it compares modern painters, particularly the British landscape painter JMW Turner, with the older masters, defending and praising the former, while also presenting his own unique theory on painting and landscape painting. A kind of ethical and religious aesthetic view is expressed in a flowing style, and it has fascinated many readers as a literary art book.
