A masterpiece by British poet A. Tennyson. Produced between 1833 and 1850, published in 1850. A dirge in the same vein as Milton's Lycidas and Shelley's Adoneas. The subject of the dirge is his close friend Arthur Hallam (the son of historian H. Hallam, a man who was expected to be a genius but died young in 1833 at the age of 22). The poem is written in eight-syllable, four-line stanzas, with a prologue, 131 paragraphs, and an epilogue, and is highly lyrical in the way it transforms the poet's pent-up feelings about the dead into faith in the immortality of the soul and in God.
