A perennial plant of the Scrophulariaceae family. Native to northeastern China, it is cultivated for its rhizomes, which are used as a medicinal tonic. The rhizomes are reddish brown and swollen, often crawling underground. The stems are erect and grow to a height of 15-30 cm, covered with dense soft hairs, and have many basal leaves at the base of the plant. The stem leaves are alternate. The leaf blade is oblong, 7-18 cm long, 2-6 cm wide, and has coarse sawtooth edges. In early summer, a single large flower blooms in the leaf axil. The corolla is pale pink-purple, tubular, about 3 cm long, and lip-shaped at the end. Inside the flower tube are four stamens with long filaments and one pistil with a long style.
