A general term for the various disciplines that scientifically study sports. In English, it is called sports science, and in German, it is called Sportwissenschaft. Sports science originally started as a science for improving the competitive abilities of top athletes, so many people think of it as a field of natural science research related to sports. However, in recent discussions in Europe and the United States, the trend is becoming more and more to view sports science as a comprehensive science that studies all phenomena related to sports. In Japan, too, more and more people are understanding sports science as a comprehensive science that covers humanities, social science, and natural science. If we organize the current scope of sports science from the perspective of academic fields, we can classify it into seven categories: sports culture, sports social science, training science, coaching science, sports medical science, health science, and sports engineering. Each specialized field is positioned within these academic fields. For example, within sports culture, there are sports philosophy, sports history, sports anthropology, and sports anthropology.

スポーツを科学的に研究する専門諸学の総称。英語ではsports science，ドイツ語ではSportwissenschaft。スポーツ科学はもともと，トップ・アスリートたちの競技力を向上させるための科学として出発したので，スポーツにかかわる自然科学的研究分野である，と限定して考える人が多い。しかし，最近の欧米の議論では，スポーツ科学をスポーツにかかわるすべての事象を研究する〈総合科学〉としてとらえる方向が主流をなしつつある。日本でも，スポーツ科学を人文・社会・自然科学を網羅する〈総合科学〉として理解する人が増えている。現段階で考えられているスポーツ科学の広がりを〈学系〉の視点で整理してみると，スポーツ文化学系，スポーツ社会科学系，トレーニング科学系，コーチング科学系，スポーツ医科学系，健康科学系，スポーツ工学系の７つに分類することができる。これらの〈学系〉のなかにそれぞれの専門諸学が位置づくことになる。たとえば，スポーツ文化学系のなかにはスポーツ哲学，スポーツ史，スポーツ人類学，スポーツ人間学……という具合。
