...Many of his works were made using the technique of inlay, in which pitch is placed on a wooden base and precious stones, shells, lapis lazuli, etc. are inlaid to create designs. The Standard of Ur is a long, horizontal panel decorated with designs on both sides. Each section is divided into bands, depicting scenes of battle, victory, feasts, and other events in a narrative style, a style unique to Mesopotamia.

The technique of inlay has been used in many areas in the West since prehistoric Mesopotamia and Egypt, followed by Greece and Rome. One of the oldest relics is the Standard of Ur (British Museum), estimated to be from around 2750 B.C. It is made by filling the base with blue lapis lazuli, in which human and animal figures are inlaid with white shells, and the border is made of red limestone.
