A leading philosopher and physician in the Western Islamic world. His Latin name was Averroes. He was born in Cordoba and died in Marrakesh. Born into a family of Maliki jurists, he studied law, philosophy, and medicine, and in 1182 became the court physician of the Almohad caliph Abu Ya'qub Yusuf and the great qadi (judge) of Cordoba, where he wielded great influence as a leading scholar. However, when his son Ya'qub al-Mansur became caliph, the Zahirid jurists gained power, and Ibn Rushd gradually lost influence within the court. He retired to the outskirts of Cordoba for a time, but in his later years he regained the monarch's favor and served at the court in Marrakesh.

西方イスラム世界の代表的な哲学者，医学者。ラテン名はアベロエスAverroes。コルドバに生まれ，マラケシュで没。マーリク派法学者の家に生まれて法学･哲学･医学の研究を重ね，1182年ムワッヒド朝のカリフ，アブー･ヤークーブ･ユースフの宮廷医師およびコルドバの大カーディー(裁判官)となり，指導的な学者として権勢を誇った。しかし，その息子ヤークーブ･アルマンスールがカリフになると，ザーヒル派法学者が力を得て，イブン･ルシュドはしだいに宮廷内で力を失い，一時コルドバ郊外に隠棲したが，晩年に再度君主の寵を回復し，マラケシュの宮廷に仕えた。
