A sacred mountain of faith that stands on the Japan Sea coast in central Niigata Prefecture. It is 634 meters above sea level. It forms a twin mountain with Mt. Kakuda (482 meters) in the north, which runs parallel to the coast. The summit serves as an observation deck for Sado Island and the Kambara Plain, and is home to a television broadcast tower, a weather observatory, and an amusement park. The eastern foot of the mountain is the sacred grounds of Echigo Ichinomiya Yahiko Shrine, and you can take a ropeway to the summit from behind the shrine. In 1970, the western side of the mountain was carved out to build the Yahiko Skyline, which is a toll road. The Echigo Nanaura Seaside Line, which is a toll road, was opened on the fault coast at the foot of the mountain, where you can enjoy driving and swimming. It attracts 2.5 million tourists a year as a place of relaxation for the people of the prefecture. It is included in the Sado-Yahiko-Yoneyama Quasi-National Park. [Hisao Yamazaki] This is an ancient shrine located at the eastern foot of Mt. Yahiko. It is the Ichinomiya (first shrine) of Echigo Province, and has been revered by people since ancient times as the ancestor of the local culture and industry. The main shrine building was destroyed in a fire in 1912 (Meiji 45), but was rebuilt in 1916 (Taisho 5). The photo shows the worship hall, which was renovated in 2001 (Heisei 13).
