Year of birth: November 14, 1746 (December 25, 1746)
A nobleman in the Edo period. Son of Gon Dainagon Yanagiwara Mitsutsuna. In 1775 (Anei 4), he became Gon Dainagon, but was dismissed from his post due to an incident in 1774, and in 1796 (Kansei 8), he was confined to his home for life for reasons that were inappropriate to his status, and he passed away. During this time, he devoted his talents to the compilation of the great work Zokushigusho (a chronology from Emperor Kameyama to Emperor Go-Momozono. Drafted in 1777 and completed in 1798). His feelings in his later years can be seen in his posthumous poem, "It is hard to see how hard it is to leave a name for the book I will leave behind for future generations." 江戸時代の公家。権大納言柳原光綱の子。安永4(1775)年権大納言となったが,7年事により免官,さらに寛政8(1796)年しばしば身分不相応の行いがあったとして永蟄居,以て死去におよんだ。この間その才識を傾注して大著『続史愚抄』(亀山天皇より後桃園天皇に至る編年史。1777年起稿,1798年脱稿)を編集した。「みはかくてしづみはつらし後の世に残さむ書の名をばとどめて」との遺詠に晩年の心情がしのばれよう。随筆に『閑窓自語』がある。<参考文献>是沢恭三「続史愚抄」(『日本歴史』194号)
