Canal ray - Canal ray (English spelling)

Canal ray - Canal ray (English spelling)
A type of anode ray. When a small hole (canal) is drilled in the cathode of a vacuum discharge tube and a discharge is made, the particle beam that comes out through the small hole is called anode ray. It was discovered by E. Goldstein in 1886. Later, W. Wien studied how it bends in electric and magnetic fields and found that it is the accelerated positive ions inside the tube that are ejected. The Stark effect was discovered from the spectrum of canal rays. JJ Thomson investigated canal rays using a method similar to that for cathode rays and was the first to discover that neon (atomic weight 20.2) has two isotopes with mass numbers 20 and 22. Canal rays are also used as a source of positive ions in mass analyzers and particle accelerators.
