Air bearing

Air bearing

A bearing that uses air instead of an oil film as a lubricant between the shaft and bearing. Compressed air created by a compressor is introduced into the bearing section, and high-pressure air is sent around the shaft. Since the shaft floats on an air film, there is almost no friction. Since air is available everywhere, there is no hassle like using oil, and there are no inconveniences with temperature rise due to friction, so it is suitable as a bearing for shafts that rotate at high speeds. It is used as a bearing for ultracentrifuges, gyros, and other devices that require high speed rotation.
