Goeika

A song with a melody that is recited during pilgrimages or lectures. It is generally recited to the sound of a bell. It is also called a pilgrimage song. Originally, it meant a hymn that praised the virtues of gods and Buddhas. After the Kamakura period, there was a trend to emphasize the spiritual effects of waka poetry, and this hymn inherited that trend. The hymns for the Thirty-Three Temples of the Western Provinces are the oldest, but there are not many that can trace their origins. The hymn for Kegon-ji Temple (Gifu Prefecture), the 33rd temple in the Western Provinces, appears in Volume 19 of the Senzaishu, the 19th hymn for Zenko-ji Temple in Shinano (Nagano Prefecture) appears in the Fugashu, and the 20th hymn for the same temple appears in the Gyokuyoshu. It is safe to assume that the composers of these hymns were mostly unknown. Sacred sites where pilgrimages are made are almost always accompanied by hymns, and they continue to be composed today.

巡礼または講などで節(ふし)を付して唱える歌。一般に鈴(れい)にあわせて詠吟される。巡礼歌ともいう。本来は、神仏の徳をたたえる御詠の意である。鎌倉時代以降、和歌の霊的作用を重視する傾向が生じ、それを継承したものである。西国(さいごく)三十三所のものがもっとも古いが、出典をたどれるものは多くない。西国第33番の華厳寺(けごんじ)（岐阜県）の御詠歌が『千載(せんざい)集』巻19に、信濃(しなの)（長野県）善光寺御詠歌第19番が『風雅(ふうが)集』に、同寺の第20番が『玉葉(ぎょくよう)集』にみられる程度である。御詠歌の作者は、ほとんど無名の人と考えて大過ない。巡礼の行われている霊場にはかならずといってよいほど御詠歌が付随しており、今日もなおつくり続けられている。
