A ridge with an asymmetrical cross section formed by differential erosion of inclined rock strata. In areas where alternating layers of highly resistant rock (hard rock) and less resistant rock (soft rock) spread out in a uniclinic structure with a steeper incline (45 degrees or more) than that of a cuesta, the hard rock is more difficult to erode than the soft rock, so the hard rock layer protrudes like a castle wall. Many examples are made of sandstone, gravel, and pyroclastic rock, and large ones are found in semi-arid regions, while small ones are also found on the surface of wave-cut benches (for example, the Oni no Sentakuita that surrounds Aoshima Island in Miyazaki Prefecture).

傾斜した岩層群に対する差別削剝によって生じ，非対称の横断形をもつ尾根。強抵抗性岩(硬岩)と弱抵抗性岩(軟岩)の互層がケスタの場合より急傾斜(45度以上)の同斜構造をなして広がる地域において，軟岩より硬岩が削剝されにくいため，硬岩層が城塁のように突出したものである。砂岩，レキ岩，火山砕屑岩などで構成される例が多く，大規模なものは半乾燥地域に多く，小規模なものは波食棚表面(たとえば宮崎県青島を取り囲む鬼の洗濯板)にもみられる。
