1884‐1954 A representative politician and thinker of Islamic reformism in Indonesia. Born in Minangkabau in West Sumatra, he received a Western-style higher education at the Willem III Gymnasium in Batavia (now Jakarta), but while working as an interpreter for the Dutch consulate in Jeddah from 1906 to 1911, he was exposed to Islamic reformism through his uncle Ahmad Khatib, a famous ulama, and returned to Islam. From 1915 onwards, he joined the mass movement organisation, the Islamic League, and as its leader, he worked to establish Islamic reformism as a political force that would play a part in the national independence movement.
