Artificial satellites are used to inform ships and aircraft of their location and aid their navigation. Traditionally, celestial navigation was used, or radar and Loran were used, but in recent years, methods using artificial satellites have been considered. There are two methods. One is the same as celestial navigation, where the position of the satellite at a certain time is measured and the angle between the horizontal plane and the position of the satellite is calculated. The other is the Doppler effect, where the position is calculated by measuring the change in the frequency of the radio waves transmitted from the satellite. Using navigation satellites, ships and aircraft can know their location regardless of day or night and in any weather. The United States has launched the Transit series since 1960 and the GPS Navsta satellites since 1989, and these are also used by submarines and general ships.

船舶や航空機に各自の位置を知らせ，その航行を助けるための人工衛星。従来は，天体を利用する天文航法や，レーダやロランを使う電波航法であったが，近年，人工衛星を利用する方法が考えられるようになった。2つの方式があり，1つは天文航法と同じで，ある時刻における衛星の位置と水平面との角度をはかり，自分の位置を算出するもの。もう1つはドップラー効果を利用し，衛星からの送信電波の周波数の変化を測定することにより，自分の位置を割出すものである。航行衛星を使えば，昼夜の別なく，またどんな天候でも船舶や飛行機は自分の位置を知ることができる。アメリカでは 1960年からトランシット・シリーズを，89年より GPSナブスタ衛星を打上げており，潜水艦や一般の船舶もこれを利用している。
