…In 213 B.C., when voices were raised praising the old feudal system and criticizing the new system of counties and prefectures, Shi Huang, on the advice of his prime minister Li Si, forbade the private ownership of all historical books other than those of the Qin Dynasty, as well as the Book of Songs, Book of Documents, and books by the Hundred Schools of Thought, and had them burned. However, this rule, which allowed the use of books on medicine, divination, and agriculture, was inherited by Emperor Gaozu of the Han Dynasty and lifted under Emperor Hui. The intellectual circles of the Qin and Han Dynasties were strongly superstitious, but especially from the middle of the Western Han Dynasty to the beginning of the Eastern Han Dynasty, theories of divination and mysticism became popular, and numerous Wei Shu appeared. …
