Atlantes - Atlantes (English spelling)

A column in Greek architecture with a male statue. It is also called a phallic column. It comes from the Greek myth of the giant god Atlas holding up the sky. A female statue is called a caryatid. The Romans called similar phallic columns Telamones, which comes from Telamon, who has the same myth as the Greek Atlas. A huge example of this remains at the Temple of Zeus at Akragas in Sicily.

ギリシア建築で男子の彫像を柱としたもの。男像柱ともいう。ギリシア神話の巨人神アトラスが天空を支えている神話に由来する。女子像はカリアティードcaryatidという。ローマ人は同様な男像柱をテラモネスTelamonesとよんだが、これはギリシアのアトラスと同じ神話をもつテラモンに由来するもの。シチリア島のアクラガスのゼウス神殿にその巨大な作例が残されている。
