Budi Utomo (English spelling)

A Javanese nationalist group that existed from 1908 to 1935. It was one of the earliest Indonesian nationalist groups. When the Javanese doctor Wahidin Sudirovsod campaigned to establish a scholarship program for poor young compatriots, students at the native medical school in Jakarta, including Sutomo, resonated with the idea and called for the formation of an organization to promote ethnic self-awareness among the Javanese. The group's name means "highest wisdom" in Javanese. It held its first conference in October 1908 in Yogyakarta, and the group gradually became more conservative, with native bureaucrats dominating the ranks.

1908年から35年まで存続したジャワ人の民族主義団体。インドネシア民族主義団体の最も初期のものに属する。ジャワ人の医師ワヒディン･スディロフソドが同胞の貧しい青年のために奨学金制度を設立しようとして遊説を行った際，ジャカルタの原住民医学校学生のストモらがこれに共鳴して，ジャワ人の民族的自覚を促す団体の結成を呼びかけた。団体名はジャワ語で〈最高の英知〉を意味する。1908年10月にジョクジャカルタで第1回大会を開き，原住民官僚が幹部を占めてしだいに保守的色彩を強めた。
