Basf [company] - Basf
A German chemical company. Founded in Mannheim in 1861 as Deckerhoff-Klemm, it manufactured soda, dyes, and ammonia. In 1865, it changed its name to Badische Anilin-und Soda-Fabrik AG (BASF) as a company that manufactured dyes from coal tar. In 1898, it exported the dye Indigo Pure to Japan. In 1925, BASF formed IG Farben with the six largest chemical companies in Germany at the time. After the company was dissolved, it was re-established as Badische Anilin-und Soda-Fabrik in 1952, and in 1973 it took on its current name. It then expanded into paints, pharmaceuticals, and petroleum. As of 2001, it is a multinational company with customers in 170 countries and production in 40 countries, and constitutes the world's largest integrated chemical group. Its head office is in Ludwigshafen, a suburb of Mannheim. Its Japanese subsidiary, BASF Japan, was established in 1949. Sales for the fiscal year ending December 2011: 73,497 million euros.
