Yasukawa Daigoro

A businessman from the Taisho to Showa periods. Born on June 2, 1886 (Meiji 19) as Keiichiro's fifth son in Ashiya (now Ashiya Town), Onga County, Fukuoka Prefecture. He developed an interest in electrical technology from an early age and went on to study electrical engineering at Tokyo Imperial University. After graduating, he worked at Hitachi and Westinghouse Electric, and with investment from his father Keiichiro, he founded Yaskawa Electric Works Limited Partnership in 1915 (Taisho 4), and then in 1919 he established Yaskawa Electric Works Co., Ltd. (now Yaskawa Electric Corporation) and absorbed the former. The company's business continued to struggle, but under the strong patronage of the Yaskawa family, it gradually improved, and in 1936 (Showa 11) he became president. After World War II, he served as director general of the Coal Agency, but was banned from public office. He subsequently held positions including chairman of Kyushu Electric Power Company, president of Japan Atomic Power Company, and chairman of the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (now the Japan Atomic Energy Agency). He also contributed to the sports world as chairman of the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee and as the chief advisor to the Sapporo Winter Olympics Organizing Committee. He is the author of many books. He passed away on June 25, 1976.
