... In Germany, potato cultivation expanded dramatically in the 19th century, thanks to national policy and the spread of printed manuals. It was successful even on small farms and on poor land unsuitable for grain cultivation, saving poor peasants and urban workers from starvation. On the other hand, its spread in France was relatively slow, and the contribution of Antoine Augustin Parmentier (1787-1813), who was a prisoner of war in Prussia during the Seven Years' War and experienced firsthand the value of potatoes as food, was a major factor. German colonists played a major role in the spread of potatoes to Eastern Europe, and in Russia, the Tsar ordered peasants on state-owned land to forcibly plant potatoes, which led to large-scale peasant riots in opposition to this (1840-44). ...
