Mahanuwara

...Kanda means mountain in Sinhalese, but the name was misrepresented by Europeans. Kandy residents call the city Mahanuwara (Great City). The Dalada Maligāwa Temple (Temple of the Tooth Relic), which houses the tooth of the Buddha, a symbol of royal succession, and the Perahera Festival (held every July or August), in which the tooth is carried on an elephant and paraded through the streets, are famous and attract many tourists.
