An evergreen tall tree of the elm family. It is widely distributed in the tropics and subtropics from Southeast Asia to Australia and the Pacific Islands. It often grows in secondary forests after logging. In Japan, it grows in the Ryukyu Islands, the Ogasawara Islands, and parts of southern Kyushu. The trunk is gray-brown and reaches a height of 10 to 15 m. The leaves are alternate and have short stalks. The leaf blade is long and ovate, 7 to 15 cm long, pointed at the tip and slightly heart-shaped at the base, with sawtooth edges, and is thick. The leaf surface, especially the underside, is densely covered with white fluff, making it appear white. From spring to summer, it produces clusters of small flowers in the leaf axils and spherical, black-ripened fruits 4 to 5 mm in diameter.
