Around 1705-79 Founder of the Zand dynasty in Iran. Reigned 1750-79. He was of the Iranian Zand tribe. After the assassination of Nadir Shah, he led the Zand tribe back from Khorasan to their native land in western Iran, gradually expanding his power. In 1763, he conquered all of Iran except Khorasan. He established his capital in Shiraz and governed well, reducing taxes, promoting industry, commerce, and trade, and protecting scholars and writers.
