A chief of the Khutgoit tribe in northwestern Mongolia in the 17th century. The name Altyn Khan is the Russian way of calling him, but his correct name is Altan Khan (Golden Khan). The first Khan, Shoroi Ubashi Hongtaiji (died 1623), based his base on the shores of Lake Uvs-Nur, and was the first Mongolian prince to establish diplomatic relations with Russia. After the second Khan, Erdeni (died 1659), the third Khan, Lobsang (died 1696), came under the rule of the Qing dynasty.
