A word meaning law or ordinance during the Mongol Empire. Yasa is a Turkish word, and in Mongolian it is called Jasak ("spread, black"). This word was apparently used to mean military law or military law before the founding of the Mongol Empire. With the founding of the empire in 1206, Genghis Khan established the basic law of the empire, which was called the Great Law (Yeke Jasak). This was later revised and refined in 1218 and 1225. The Great Law is thought to have been codified based on the customary law of the Mongol people, but also incorporating various contents necessary for the governance of a large empire.
