A deciduous small shrub of the Ericaceae family that grows in alpine wastelands (illustration). The leaves are relatively large, with a conspicuous mesh pattern on the underside, hence the name "Urastriped Azalea." The stems crawl above ground, with the leaves growing in clusters at the ends. The leaves are obovate with rounded tips, 2-5 cm long and 8-16 mm wide, with numerous fine sawtooth edges, thick texture, and thin veins that are concave on the upper surface and prominent on the underside. In autumn, the leaves turn a beautiful red. In early summer, short racemes grow from the ends of the previous year's branches, and several flowers bloom. The corolla is urn-shaped with five lobes at the tip, yellowish-white. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
