The two coronary arteries that nourish the heart emerge from the aortic root and enter the subepicardium. The left coronary trunk divides into the anterior descending artery and the circumflex artery, the former of which descends through the anterior interventricular groove toward the apex of the heart and gives off diagonal and septal perforator branches along the way.
