Yakushimaran - Yakushimaran

Japanese: ヤクシマラン - やくしまらん

This terrestrial orchid has the most primitive flower shape among Japanese orchids. It is found in a small area in southern Kyushu. The rhizome is short. The stem is less than 10 cm tall. There are about five narrowly ovate leaves, 2-3 cm long. In July, several flowers appear at the top of the stem. The flowers are yellow and just under 1 cm in diameter. The sepals and petals are almost identical in shape, slightly recurved, almost radially symmetrical, and have no spur. The stamens and pistils are separate, and do not fuse together to form a column like other orchidaceae plants. Instead, two fertile stamens and one stamen separate at the bottom of the columnar pistil, surrounding the pistil.

日本のランの中でその花の形が最も原始的とされる地生ラン。九州の南部にわずかに分布する。根茎は短い。茎は高さ10cm以内。葉は5枚前後で，狭卵形，長さ2～3cm。7月ころ，茎頂に数花をつける。花は黄色，径1cm弱。萼片と花弁はほぼ同形で軽く反り返り，ほぼ放射相称で距はない。おしべとめしべは離生していて，他のラン科植物のように合生して蕊柱（ずいちゆう）をつくることはなく，柱状のめしべの下部で分かれた2個の稔性のあるおしべと1個の仮雄蕊がめしべを取り囲む。
