Coast Defense Ship

A small ship for coastal defense. It is equivalent to the frigates and corvettes built by the British and American navies for convoy escort, but the Japanese Navy did not seriously consider convoy escort until the middle of the Pacific War, so it was mainly used for patrolling the North Sea. The four Shimushu-class ships built in 1937 (Showa 12) were the first type designed as coastal defense ships. During the war, about 170 Type A, Type C, and Type D ships were built with strengthened anti-submarine armaments and acted as the main force for convoy escort. Type A coastal defense ships had a standard displacement of 940 tons, a speed of 19.5 knots, and were equipped with three 12-cm anti-aircraft guns, six 25-mm machine guns, and 120 depth charges.

沿岸防備用の小型艦をいう。イギリス、アメリカ両海軍が船団護衛用に建造したフリゲートやコルベットに相当するが、日本海軍は太平洋戦争中期まで船団護衛を真剣に考えていなかったので、おもに北洋警備用として使われていた。1937年（昭和12）建造された占守(しむしゅ)型4隻が海防艦として設計された最初の型。大戦中、甲型、丙型、丁型約170隻が対潜兵装を強化して建造され、船団護衛の主力として活動した。甲型海防艦は基準排水量940トン、速力19.5ノットで、12センチ高角砲3門、25ミリ機銃6門、爆雷120個を装備していた。
