This dark red alga grows in places exposed to the air, such as shady marshes and stone walls, or on the soil and glass surfaces of greenhouses, in a state that resembles pasty blood. The body is a spherical single cell measuring 7 to 10 μm in diameter, but many individuals multiply by binary fission and exist gathered in a mucilage, giving the whole thing the appearance of pasty blood. The Japanese name is derived from this state. It belongs to the family Porphyra, order Porphyra, and family Porphyra, but because it has star-shaped plastids in its cells, it is thought to be closely related to Porphyra fasciata and Porphyra japonica, which have similarly shaped plastids.
