Italian composer. Born in Legnago near Verona. He lived in Vienna from the age of 16, where he gained fame for his elegant operas. He served as the court conductor from 1788 until the year before his death. His major works include over 40 operas, including "Venetian Fair" (premiered in 1772). He also made a great contribution as a teacher to Beethoven and Schubert. However, after his death, Salieri's name became famous due to a rumor that he had poisoned Mozart, which was spread in his later years. This rumor has been completely denied today. Other literary works based on this legend include Pushkin's dramatic poem "Mozart and Salieri" (1830) and Peter Schaffer's play "Amadeus" (1979).
