The Third Roman Treatise

A Russian political theory from the early 16th century. It describes Moscow as the capital of the last Christian empire in human history, and was expressed in a letter by the Pskov monk Philofei to Vasily III and other Grand Princes of Moscow. According to Philofei, the Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire (the "two Romes") fell because they deviated from the "true faith," but Moscow, as their successor state, would rule the world until the end of the world. This idea was expressed from a clerical standpoint, and cannot immediately be interpreted as an ambition for world domination on the part of the Moscow state authorities.

16世紀初頭におけるロシアの政治理論。モスクワを人類史上最後のキリスト教世界帝国の首都とするもので，プスコフの僧フィロフェイがワシーリー3世らモスクワ大公にあてた書簡のなかで表明された。彼によれば，ローマ帝国とビザンティン帝国(〈二つのローマ〉)は〈真の信仰〉から逸脱したために滅亡したが，モスクワはその後継国家として，世界を終末のときに至るまで支配する，という。この思想は，聖職者としての立場から表明されたものであり，これをただちにモスクワ国家当局の世界支配への野望ととることはできない。
