1811‐87 Danish politician and theologian. In the 1840s, as a leader of the National Liberal Party, he was active in calling for universal suffrage and a constitution through pamphlets and the newspaper Fatherland. After the bloodless revolution of 1848, he joined the new cabinet and served as Minister of Culture. He was the main drafter of the 1849 constitution, and after serving as supervisor of the county of Lolland (1849-54), he rejoined the cabinet as Minister of Culture (1860-63) and became Prime Minister in December 1863.
