Sawara [city] - Sawara

Japanese: 佐原[市] - さわら
Sawara [city] - Sawara
An old city in northeastern Chiba Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1951. The northern part is a low-lying marshland in the Tone River basin, and the southern part is part of the Shimousa Plateau. The surrounding area has been developed as the sacred land of Katori Shrine since ancient times, and the brewing industry, which produces sake, miso, soy sauce, etc., has been thriving since ancient times. In the early modern period, the city center flourished as a river port on the Tone River. The north bank of the Tone River is the center of Suigo Tsukuba Quasi-National Park, also known as Suigo Jyurokushima, and is also home to the Aquatic Botanical Garden and the Otone Museum. The surrounding area is famous for its crisscrossing waterways and for producing early-season rice. Groundnuts are a specialty of the plateau, and vegetables and pears are also cultivated here. The Narita Line was opened in 1898, and the Kashima Line branched off in 1970, connecting the city to southern Ibaraki Prefecture. In 1977, the Suigo Ohashi Bridge was built over the Tone River, and the Higashi-Kanto Expressway, which opened in 1986, also connects the city to Itako in Ibaraki Prefecture. It is home to Katori Shrine, the former home of Ino Tadataka (historic site), and the Jyurokushima firefly shrimp breeding grounds (natural monument). In March 2006, it merged with Omigawa-cho, Yamada-cho, and Kurimoto-cho in Katori County to become a city. It has an area of 119.88 km2 and a population of 48,295 (2003).
