A declaration to protect the human rights of children. It is also known as the Universal Declaration of the Rights of the Child or the Declaration on the Rights of the Child. It was adopted at the 14th United Nations General Assembly on November 20, 1959. It is based on the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and consists of a preamble and 10 articles. It confirms that children who are immature in both body and mind should be guaranteed healthy development, happiness, and social rights. As practical guarantees, it proclaims principles such as non-discrimination and equality, social security, upbringing with love and understanding, primary education, medical treatment and education for physically and mentally disabled children, and protection from neglect, abuse, and exploitation (→child abuse). Japan passed a resolution of support for the Convention on the Rights of the Child at a plenary session of the House of Councilors in December 1959.
