〘Noun〙 A rice field near a gate. A rice field in front of a house. Monden. Kandoda. ※Man'yoshu (late 8th century) 8/1596 "The thought of going to see my sister's gate rice field and hitting it with my sword is so touching on this moonlit night." ※Genji (around 1001-14) Tenarai "When I was harvesting rice from the gate rice field, I put it in the place and imitated it." [Etymology] Under the Ritsuryo system of the Land Distribution Law, private ownership of "kakitsuta (rice field within a fence)" and "kadota (rice field within a gate)" was recognized. This was born as a way to secure private land by taking advantage of a blind spot in the law that if a field was surrounded by a fence, it would be considered private land within the mansion.
